Sooke Shukokai student Aliyah went to the Vancouver Island Karate Championship in Nanaimo last weekend. Despite having her divisions merged with older/higher belts, she still came home with gold in both kata and kumite (sparring). Aliyah would have been normally been in the 7 and under all belts division. However due to registration numbers (she was the only girl in that category), the tournament merged 8/9 novice and 8/9 intermediate.
A 100% gold placement certainly hasn't decreased her interest in tournaments and we're looking forward to the next Vancouver Island Tournament - the Victoria Open in June. With how geographically close that one is, we're expecting to be entering more students.
For those wondering, how did Sensei Nick do since he often competes? Due to vehicular issues he didn't make it up to the tournament, but he'll be officiating and competing in Richmond and Victoria soon.
